Eastport MPA Management Plan Update in Progress
By
the end of 2011 Eastport MPAs will have a refreshed and updated
Management Plan ready to go into effect. The first Eastport Marine
Protected Areas Management Plan was released in 2007. Steering
Committee members are currently reviewing that plan, taking stock of
accomplishments and progress over the past four years and looking to
the future. The MPA monitoring program has been peer reviewed at a
Regional Advisory Process meeting hosted by DFO Science Branch, and the
general public will be consulted over the coming months to gain as much
input as possible before finalizing the new plan.

Eastport Peninsula
The Eastport Peninsula, one of the most
picturesque areas of Bonavista Bay, is located approximately three hours
drive from St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. The
rugged coastline is interrupted by a number of headlands, coves, and
beaches. Numerous islands found in the area provide habitat for a
variety of marine wildlife.
In October 2000, marine areas surrounding
the Eastport Peninsula were officially announced as an Area of Interest
(AOI) in the Marine Protected Area Program.
This website provides information about
the Marine Protected Areas program and the process of designating the
Eastport site as a MPA. |

Steering Committee: Eastport MPA
|
The
Eastport Marine Protected Areas Steering Committee was set up to
direct the process of establishing the Eastport MPAs and continues
to guide and advise MPA activities in accordance with the management
plan. The Eastport Peninsula Lobster Protection Committee, the
business community and three levels of government are represented on
the steering committee.
The committee monitors the effectiveness of the Eastport MPAs in
reaching conservation goals, and oversees research and monitoring
projects, log book and tag return programs, and public awareness
projects.
The Steering Committee is currently co-chaired by Laura Park,
an Oceans Biologist with Fisheries
and Oceans Canada and Wade Turner, a Fish Harvester and founding
member of the Eastport Peninsula Lobster Protection Committee.
