Activities In The Process
The Eastport
MPA process is now in the final stage – management.
There is scientific evidence that suggests that protecting the two areas of
habitat has sustained and perhaps enhanced the local lobster fishery.
The continued
involvement of stakeholders and the active interest of the Steering
Committee are still crucially important to ensure that the MPA continues to
deliver benefits to the lobster stock, the marine habitat and the fishery
that depends on it.
The Steering Committee is now looking into ways to include the wider
community in the benefits stemming from the success of the MPA. Much
important work also remains to be done in the area of public education and
awareness, promoting the MPA as an inspiration for future stewardship
initiatives in the Eastport Peninsula area and beyond.
