A Fishing Heritage

The rich, productive waters surrounding the Eastport Peninsula are host to a wide range of ground fish, pelagic fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and aquatic plants.

Since early settlement the people of the Eastport Peninsula have relied on the fishery for their economic subsistence.

In 1992, the cod moratorium caused drastic changes in the fishery of this province.  Fishers on the Eastport Peninsula were not immune to these changes.  They re-directed their efforts to the lobster fishery.  However, they observed that this fishery was also in jeopardy.  Something had to be done.
