Eastport Marine Protected Areas Management Plan
On
July 18, 2007, Fisheries and Oceans Minister Loyola Hearn announced
the release of the Eastport Marine Protected Areas Management Plan. Ours
is the first MPA management plan to be finalized in Canada,
and is designed to help our Steering Committee stay on track as they work
towards achieving MPA conservation goals. To see the full text of the management
plan, click here.
Our Mission Statement:
"To increase stakeholder involvement in the
development, management, monitoring, evaluation and surveillance of local
fishery resources and the supporting habitats to develop sustainable
economic activities." |

Eastport Peninsula
The Eastport Peninsula, one of the most picturesque areas of Bonavista
Bay, is located approximately three hours drive from St. John's, the capital
of Newfoundland and Labrador. The rugged coastline is interrupted by a
number of headlands, coves, and beaches. Numerous islands found in the
area provide habitat for a variety of marine wildlife.
In October 2000, marine areas surrounding the Eastport Peninsula were
officially announced as an Area of Interest (AOI) in the Marine Protected
Area Program.
This website provides information about the Marine Protected Areas
program and the process of designating the Eastport site as a MPA.

Steering Committee: Eastport MPA
|
The Eastport
Marine Protected Areas Steering Committee was set up
to direct the process of
establishing the Eastport MPAs and now continues to guide and advise MPA
activities in accordance with the management plan. Committee members come
from the Eastport Peninsula Lobster Protection Committee, the
community and the three levels of government.
The committee monitors the effectiveness of the Eastport MPAs in reaching
conservation goals, and also oversees research and monitoring projects, log
book and tag return programs, and public awareness outreach.
The Steering Committee is currently co-chaired by Jennifer Janes,
Oceans Biologist for the Marine Protected Areas Program of Fisheries and
Oceans Canada and Wade Turner, Fish Harvester and a founding member of the
Eastport Peninsula Lobster Protection Committee. |
