Eastport MPA Steering Committee
The Eastport MPA Steering Committee is intended to provide
Fisheries and Oceans Canada with insight and assistance as it relates to the
proposed MPA. Although the Federal Government, through the Oceans Act,
has the legislative authority to undertake measures related to MPAs,
collaboration, consultation and stakeholder participation are extremely
important principles that are strongly advocated in this process. The MPA
Steering Committee considers the implications for the local area, and makes
recommendations to the Federal Government.
Some of
these recommendations have in fact become part of the legislation created
specifically for the Eastport MPAs.
Each MPA is unique, and each MPA Steering Committee will also
have a degree of uniqueness which reflects the nature of the region for which
MPA status is being proposed. The Eastport MPA Steering Committee has
three levels of participants:
-
Stakeholders who are directly affected by the MPA and are
active, voting members.
-
Stakeholders who are not directly affected by the MPA but may
be able to provide advice and assistance to the MPA Steering Committee are
ex-officio members. Ex-officio members attend most meetings of the MPA
Steering Committee.
-
Stakeholders who are interested resource persons or agencies.
These stakeholders are not likely to attend many meetings of the MPA Steering
Committee, but are kept informed with minutes and any forthcoming information
through mail, fax or e-mail lists.
